Contrast in the State of Green IT in Australia

I was very interested in a strong contrast in the state of Green IT in Australia, on one hand, IBM research has highlighted Australia as a leader in Green IT awareness, and UK-based IT recycling outfit, Just Recycle IT, has launched in Australia. It specialises in the removal and disposal of redundant IT. The basis of the interest in the local market is the lack of relevant recycling legislation.

I feel that the market here is going to be highly regulated in the near future, especially in the light of Australia's government change. The IBM research is of course positive for Australia, but along with the rest of the world, there is a considerable amount to be done before IT can claim any level of Green maturity.

Kyocera - Green Vendor of the year in Australia

Recently Kyocera was awarded the price of Green IT vendor of the year in Australia, largely from the environmental citizen approaches of employees as well as for the product packaging technology utilised. A challenge is to encourage people to print less, that is tough for all printer companie, though the shift to Multi Function Platforms is a good step

News and Green IT - Some motivations perhaps

I was thinking about News Corporation and Rupert Murdoch’s relatively aggressive moves towards more eco friendly corporate responsibilities. I think that there are several aspects to consider in this.

They see a government change and increasing certainty in key markets of the and , as well as a new PM in the . Expectations of stronger regulation in those markets is pretty high.

As a media organization they are also able to take a "moral" and likely self righteous stand on the issue

Murdoch now has very young children and grandchildren as well as adult children, perhaps a view towards his young children's future (I am not always cynical)

Benefits of Early Adoption for Green IT

To put things simply, being an early adopter for Green IT is going to be critical because of the following factors Early adopters (especially global media companies) can help define the agenda of regulation review and benchmarking

An early adopter can push for quick deadlines, when they set the agenda, forcing their competitors to have to invest either increased resources, cost or both.

Early adopters are able to achieve a more cost effective solution

The disadvantage is that early adoption of technology or process runs a risk if the above objectives are not met, but in this instance there are several benefits to it that may outweigh the cost.

EDS and Green IT - WIll the use the Agility Alliance to their advantage

On Wednesday night I attended the Australian launch of EDS's Green IT. Given the explosion in interest of Green IT, this is not of real note. The exception is that to date all the vendors looking publicly at Green IT initiatives have been hardware providers of one sort or another. We have seen outcomes from HP, Dell, IBM, Wyse amongst many others focusing on Green IT. Where EDS has a potential advantage is through the use of the Agility Alliance. When this was announced I was quite cynical, especially from the perspective of the interaction between the various members and collaboration with multiple partners. But we have seen evidence that EDS can act as a hub, and a small number of vendors can then provide integrated solutions together. This is where the advantage in terms of Green IT will come through. As a company that does not manufacture a product, EDS can leverage and combine the elements of the hardware side of the Agility Alliance to produce integrated solutions to save energy, resources and also to meet the certain regulatory environment that is starting in some markets and will be global soon. For example a combination of Fuji Xerox, Dell and EDS will be able to provide (in principle at least) a significant offering in terms of Green IT. Given the portfolio of HP, they will be able to match this, but IBM will have to have some strong challenges in providing such as solution.
